A happy pompom project

Throughout November at Saxonwood, residents have been keeping busy on a brand new project which they named our “happy pompom project”. This special crafty activity has involved making many different pompoms, of all colours and sizes, ready for the Sussex Housing & Care craft day on 17 November.

The goal was to make enough pompoms to create beautiful pompom wreaths for Christmas, wait until you see our results below!

With the involvement of residents’ families and friends, as well as Saxonwood staff, the project has been a real team effort and brought a smile to everyones faces. Families and residents have been comparing pompoms on the Saxonwood relatives’ Facebook page and it’s sparked a buzz throughout the home.

Residents couldn’t wait to get started. They all received boxes with wool and templates for pompom making and production was soon in full swing. Many residents had made pompoms in the past, but for some it was a brand new experience! With a little help from staff, those who hadn’t made a pompom before enjoyed learning something new.

Gail who lives at Saxonwood helped Martin, who works on Saxonwood’s maintenance, and together they made a great start on their pompoms. Gail said: “Martin was not sure how to get this task done, but I used to do pompoms when I was younger so I had to teach him and we got great results together.”

We also loved how our relatives, friends and families took part in this project and supported our pompom production! They kindly dropped off their creations to the home, in a safe way, and before we knew it we had a brilliant number and variety.

Kathleen was very excited to see the pompoms made by her family to add to her collection.

All of our residents were supported to join in with this project and generated fun and laughter, and most importantly, residents did something meaningful together.

Georgie, a resident at Saxonwood, said: “It is so nice that residents were supported to do activities in their rooms and get involved, I love to make pompoms.”

And Joan, who has lived at Saxonwood for 10 years said: “There was so much kindness and care around this project, thank you to all staff for lifting our spirits.”

The big day soon came when all of us came together to make our Christmas wreaths from our happy pompoms, and we hope you agree….don’t they look fantastic!?

This project is part of our sunny moments club, where we are passionate about creating moments with our residents that will brighten their day. We have an ever-changing programme full of activities and fun things to do, giving residents the chance to do what they love best, or explore new experiences or talents.
